Basic Attacks

This is Hector, a Troll character RPed by [
lvlercy]. Say hello... Okay, now Hector is a Soldier, armed with a rather large weapon called a
Great Maul or for technical purposes, an Iron Big Two-Handed Hammer. Now his opponent is going to be the basic
Fantasma Monster: Skeleton Fighter. Little more than bones with a sword and shield.
Vertical Attack and Retaliation
Before we get into the combat, make sure you understand the power and quality of your weapon before you go about flailing it at an opponent. Hector has nothing to worry about since his hammer is quite sturdy but just a little heavy. Now the battle results are measured via dice, two 6-sided dice to be exact. The first roll is the number for the offensive target (In this case, Hector) and the second roll is the number for the defensive target, or our boney friend.
Wait!!!
Before Rolling, Hector must decide his attack and weapon he is attacking with. The standard attack is just a regular vertical swing, or up and down motion of the weapon and Hector decides to use that.
Hector rolls... 5 + Hector's Accuracy of 3, the total number equals 8.
Skeleton rolls... 3 + Skeleton's Agility of 3, the total number equals 6
Obviously, 8 is higher than 6, and so the poor skeleton takes the damage the hammer deals, which is 6.
Now, the Skeleton has a retaliation turn. However, in a one-on-one fight this effect doesn't take place and merely becomes one turn after the other. For this instance, we'll just refer to it as a retaliation for simplicity's sake. The same procedure follows for the skeleton, decide the attack and the weapon to attack with. The skeleton is a simple minded monster, so its not into anything fancy and will just vertical attack with its sword.
Skeleton Rolls... 4 + Skeleton's Accuracy of 3, the total number equals 7
Hector Rolls... 3 + Hector's Agility of 1, the total number equals 4
7 is higher than 4, so the skeleton successfully retaliates and does 2 damage. Why only 2 you may ask, well that is because Hector has a Cutting resistance on his armor, and the particular attack the skeleton performed with its sword was a cutting attack, so the damage of 3 on normal targets is reduced to 2 upon Hector.

Horizontal Attack and Automatic counterattack
Now this is only a one-on-one battle, but for the purposes of this tutorial we will have the Skeleton's turn go first this time, as its retaliation was the previous action it had taken. Now, there is another basic attack which is more complicated that the vertical attack, but provides some features that will be useful in combat. It is called the horizontal attack, or a simple side to side sweep of the weapon. It should be noted that
throwing weapons and ammo based weapons such as bows cannot do this attack. Since the skeleton has neither, it does not need to worry about this defect. The Horizontal attack is good for fighting very agile foes, because the sweeping motion of the blade is more difficult to dodge because it covers more area on a plane, and will increase the offensive target's accuracy by 2. A Horizontal attack will also hit all targets surrounding the attacker, but unfortunately a horizontal attack does only half the damage of a normal vertical attack.
Skeleton Rolls... 3 + Skeleton's Accuracy of 3 + 2 for the Horizontal Attack, the total number equals 8
Hector Rolls... 6 + Hector's Agility of 1, the total number equals 7
A valiant effort by Hector to try and dodge the attack, but unfortunately this bulky Troll has difficulty evading this bleached cadaver, but since the attack is even less effective, the base number of damage for the sword is halved at 1.5 and Hector resists 1. So Hector gets away with a scratch, only taking 0.5 damage. Luckily for Hector, its his retaliation now and Hector is a fan of vertical attacks, then he decides to stick with his hammer.
Hector Rolls... 1 + Hector's Accuracy of 3, the total number equals 4
Skeleton Rolls... 6 + Skeleton's Agility of 3, the total number equals 9
Now this is definitely a miss for the Troll, since 4 is not enough to hit a 9. Unfortunately, that is not all there is to this roll. Since Hector was so unlucky with this attack to be 5 under his opponent's total (the difference between 1 and 6, lowest and highest numbers on a 6-sided dice) the Skeleton is allowed what is called an "automatic counterattack" which means the Skeleton gets to attack, again! (This will not count against its next turn)
Skeleton Rolls... 2 + Skeleton's Accuracy of 3, the total number equals 5
Hector Rolls... 5 + Hector's Agility of 1, the total number equals 6
Hector was lucky this time, as he barely escaped a counterattack by the skeleton and takes no damage.

Thrusting Attack and Automatic defending
Now its Hector's turn again, and as before stated, Hector is a fan of vertical attacks. He hasn't quite learned the effectiveness of tactics, so he just keeps doing what he knows best and vertical attacks with his hammer.
Hector Rolls... 3 + Hector's Accuracy of 3, the total number equals 6
Skeleton Rolls... 3 + Skeleton's Agility of 3, the total number equals 6
Now you might ask, what happens when the numbers are tied? This is called the automatic defend, in most cases this is very useful but with fragile weapons and no shield this can sometimes mean disaster for a character. However, that will be discussed later along in the tutorial, for now lets do the math.
Hector's attack does 5 impact damage, more than enough to alarm a skeleton.
The Skeleton's defense with its sword is average, which is basically a 3. Now the skeleton with just its sword would take 2 damage and have its sword reduced to a defensive quality of 1. Which means it it were to defend again with its sword, the weapon would surely break. Now, because the skeleton has a targe shield that has a "-2 all damage" feature, that means that when it defends it reduces 2 of the damage done by Hector's weapon in concordance with its weapon defense. This time, the skeleton is able to ward off the attack and survive without injury to itself or its armament. This also shows why shields are very important to have if you want to survive defending.
Now it is the skeleton's retaliation, and it wants to try something different to get through the armor of this brutish Troll. You may question how this is possible, well there is a third basic attack for just this purpose. It changes the damage of a few weapon types into another form to allow the weapon to get through armor types that would otherwise keep the attacker from harming the target enough to claim a victory. This is called the "thrust attack", mainly because that is the action for a sword to change from cutting damage to piercing damage. (Swords are the popular weapon to do this with, and the reason why swords are so much more expensive than other weapons). However, a thrust can be risky, because you have limited the plane of attack to a single point, which will reduce the accuracy of the attack instead of help it like the horizontal attack does. It should be noted that this attack, like the horizontal attack, cannot be performed by throwing or ammo based weaponry.
Skeleton Rolls... 4 + Skeleton's Accuracy of 3 -1 for the thrusting attack, the total number equals 6
Hector Rolls... 2 + Hector's Agility of 1, the total number equals 3
The Skeleton succeeds in thrusting its sword into Hector, and therefor dealing damage the Troll has no resistance too. Hector takes the full 3 damage of the sword, but still lives. So you now can understand the effectiveness of switching through different attacks in order to overwhelm your enemy. With the knowledge of basic attacks, you're character is on their way to becoming a feared fighter.
