A skilled mobile suit pilot, for ZAFT’s mobile suit development satellite “ALPHA”, but is not a solider. He is a mobile suit designer and an engineer for ZAFT. While testing a prototype GINN he is attacked by an unknown mobile suit with the Eurasian Foundation symbol on it’s left shoulder. Michaels GINN was destroyed in the battle but luckily Michael escapes before the GINN exploded. After floating in space for 10 minutes a ZAFT search team rescued him and took him to a ZAFT luxury cruiser. Inside the ship he met with Patrick Zala (leader of the supreme high council of the PLANTs). Chairman Zala told Michael that he has been watching his mobile suit abilities and wanted him to join the new ZAFT project to end the PLANT’s suffering code-named AMATU (Assassin Massacres Against the Usual). The objective of the project is to slaughter the Naturals in the Atlantic Federation and the Eurasian Foundation with mobile suit attacks and each member of the team has the chance to create their own mobile suits so the enemy can’t recognize the make and the organization that the mobile suits come from. Michael declined and returned to ALPHA to finish his work for the day. The next day when Michael was working on another custom GINN when he got a message from Chairman Zala saying that he wants to speak with him aboard his ship. Michael takes a shuttle to the ship and is greeted with sad faces. Michael got to the chairman’s office and asked was something wrong. The chairman explained that Michael's father was killed by a federation terrorist group called Blue Cosmos. Michael then accepted the offer to join the AMATU team and vowed revenge against the Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael. Patrick Zala returned to his office on Junius Seven, he sat in his office laughing his evil plan is finally starting

All of this took place in February1-2 CE: 70 on February 14 CE: 70 the PLANT city Junius Seven was Destroyed by the Earth Federation using nuclear weapons. That day is known as “The Bloody Valentine” which started the “Bloody Valentine War” on February 14 CE: 71
