Buffy's Bio

Buffy Summers was born in January 1981 to Hank and Joyce Summers, making her 22 now. As a child, she went through a phase during which she idolized ice-skater Dorothy Hamill, and was close friends with her cousin Celia until she died. Buffy started her high school career at Hemery High in Los Angeles, where she was a popular cheerleader; in 1996 she was elected Prom Princess and Fiesta Queen. That same year, Buffy was contacted by a man named Merrick, who told her that she was the Chosen One, the Vampire Slayer. Though Buffy was skeptical, it was true; Merrick was her Watcher. But Merrick was killed, and in Buffy's attempts at slaying, she managed to burn down her high school gym. Around that time, Joyce and Hank finalized their divorce, and Buffy moved with Joyce to 1630 Revello Drive in Sunnydale. She enrolled at Sunnydale High School, where the school librarian, Giles, informed her that he was her new Watcher. Though reluctant, Buffy was sucked full force into the life of a Slayer. Buffy became friends with Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and to some extent, Cordelia Chase; and later with Willow's boyfriend Oz, all of whom knew that she was the Slayer (her mother finally found out at the end of Season 2) and often helped in her endeavors. Buffy developed a relationship with Angel, a vampire cursed with a soul; it ended when he lost his soul, turning him back into his evil vampiric self, but they got back together after his soul was restored again. Ultimately, Angel eventually realized that as Buffy got older, their relationship would be doomed, as he could never give her anything resembling a normal life. Thus, he left her, for her own good. During her freshman year at UC Sunnydale, Buffy roomed with Willow and developed a relationship with Riley Finn. After about a year together, Riley left Buffy and Sunnydale, feeling that Buffy didn't need nor love him. During her sophomore year at college, Buffy survived several family crises — first she discovered that her 14 year-old sister (introduced in Season 5) isn't actually her sister, but is a mystical "Key" just recently turned into human form and placed into Buffy's life (false memories included) so that Buffy could protect her. Then her mother had a brain tumor removed, only to later die from an aneurysm arising as a side effect from her surgery. Buffy dropped out of college to take care of Dawn. In the final fight against Glory, a hellgod seeking to use the Key, Buffy sacrificed her life to save Dawn's and the world. A few months later (Season 6), Willow brought Buffy back from the dead using dark magicks. Unfortunately, Buffy had been at peace in a heaven-like place, and being ripped out and plunked back onto earth was extremely hard on her, to say the least. In an effort to feel something, anything, she secretly took up a sexual (and violent) relationship with Spike, who had fallen in love with her during Season 5. Spike didn't accept the eventual breakup very well and at one point ended up attempting to rape Buffy. A trio of nerds (Warren, Andrew, and high school acquaintance Jonathan) who fancied themselves as villains, made themselves a nuisance to Buffy and the gang, culminating in Warren shooting and severely injuring Buffy. The same attack also accidentally left Tara dead, driving Willow over the edge. Buffy was no match for Willow's immense magical powers, and when Willow set out to destroy the world, it was Xander that got through to her and saved them all. Buffy has recently been hired at the new Sunnydale High School as a part-time counselor for troubled students.
Sarah's Bio

Sarah Michelle Gellar, 26, is one of the most popular young actresses today, and has worked hard to get there. Sarah has been a workaholic for years, and still describes herself as such. She was discovered by an agent at the age of four, and soon after began work on her first job, the TV movie, An Invasion of Privacy. Sarah appeared in numerous commercials, including one with Seth Green when they were around five years old. Over the next few years, she obtained small roles in movies and television (while attending The Professional Children's School), but her first big break came in 1993 when she won the role of Kendall Hart, Susan Lucci's daughter (which Julie Benz, who played Darla on BtVS, also auditioned for the role of Buffy) on All My Children. She played the villainess for two and a half years, winning a daytime Emmy in 1995 and announcing her departure the day after the awards ceremony (though she had given notice six months prior). Sarah's next big break came when she auditioned for the role of Cordelia on BtVS, but instead was chosen to play Buffy herself. And the rest, as they say, is history. Sarah has blossomed on Buffy, and the show got her the attention she needed to start getting bigger movie roles. Sarah's talents include Tae Kwon Do, kickboxing, and ice-skating (she competed when she was younger). Sarah was estranged from her father for many years (he died of an apparent suicide in October 2001) is very close to her mother. Sarah is close friends with actress Lindsay Sloane, who was a bridesmaid at Sarah's wedding.
Birthdate: April 14, 1977
Birthplace: New York City
Height: 5'3"
Eyes/Hair: Green/naturally dark brown
Tattoos: The Chinese symbol for integrity on her lower back, the Tao symbol for patience on her right ankle, a Celtic design on her left hip, and a dagger hanging over a heart on one ankle, presumably her left (gotten after the demise of a relationship, to remind her how precarious love is)
Dating status: Married actor Freddie Prinze, Jr. on September 1, 2002, in Mexico.
Sarah has been a regular since the beginning, appearing in every episode thus far.

Willow's Bio

Willow Rosenberg was born to Ira and Sheila Rosenberg; she is the only Jewish member of the Scooby Gang. She doesn't appear to have the most superb family life; her parents are out of touch with Willow's life, and her mother once tried to burn her at the stake. Willow has been friends with Xander since childhood (when they were five, they "dated" briefly until Xander stole her Barbie doll), and she quickly became best friends with Buffy when she came to town. Willow is extremely intelligent, a whiz on computers, and an excellent student who is known for her tutoring abilities. She has helped Buffy and Giles numerous times by hacking into various records and databases, and she even taught Jenny Calendar's computer class after Jenny was killed by Angelus. Willow long had "more than friends" feelings toward Xander, and after years of ignoring her, Xander finally seemed to return those feelings — while the two were both dating other people. When Oz and Cordelia found out about their indiscretion, they ended it, and Willow and Oz were able to save their relationship, unlike Xander and Cordelia. Willow will probably always have a soft spot for Xander, as demonstrated by her crying jag when she found out that Xander had slept with Faith. Nonetheless Willow later lost her own virginity to Oz. Willow had a hard time when Oz left Sunnydale, but found love with fellow Wiccan Tara, who in the end she chose over Oz. Willow got increasingly powerful and skilled with magic throughout Season 5, and she was able to hurt and immobilize Glory and restore Tara's sanity (Glory had fed off Tara's mind). In Season 6, Willow continued to further her use of magic, and she and Tara argued about whether Willow overusing it. After Tara found out that Willow had done a spell to make Tara forget their fight, the couple broke up. This, combined with an accident she caused while on a magic high, nearly killing Dawn, provided the catalyst for her giving up magic entirely. A few months later, they got back together, but very shortly thereafter, Tara was tragically shot and killed by Warren. This enraged the powerful witch, and she used dark magicks to make herself extremely powerful, even absorbing the power of the visiting Giles. She killed Warren, then, overwhelmed, decided to end the world. After fighting off Buffy, it was Xander who got through to Willow. Willow went to England for the summer with Giles, who, along with a coven of witches, trained her so that she could control and use properly the magic within her.
Alyson Lee Hannigan, 29, got her start in show business at four years old, modeling and appearing in commercials (for such companies as McDonald's, Six Flags Amusement Parks, and Oreo cookies). At some point, her family moved to Atlanta, and later to California, so that Alyson could audition for more roles. At fourteen, she got her first big role, in the film, My Stepmother is an Alien; interestingly, Seth Green played her love interest in the movie. Though she continued working, Alyson didn't get famous until she got the part of Willow on Buffy, and the recognition has allowed her to start getting bigger roles in bigger movies. Alyson enjoys soccer (she hasn't played too much since she was injured at thirteen, though), she is a fan of old Shirley Temple movies, and she loves dolphins. She is computer literate, though not so much as her BtVS character, and she has been known to check out some of the fan sites dedicated to her and even to post at the official site's posting board.

Birthdate: March 24, 1974
Birthplace: Washington, DC
Height: 5'3"
Eyes/Hair: Green/red
Tattoos: Tribal dolphins on her ankle; Japanese kanji (for luck and happiness) on her back
Dating status: Married to former co-star Alexis Denisof (Wesley) since Oct. 11, 2003. The two have been a couple since Dec. 1999.
Alyson has been a regular since the beginning, appearing in every episode thus far.

Spike, also known as William the Bloody, got his nickname due to his penchant for torturing victims with railroad spikes. However, his William the Bloody nickname has less glamorous origins — it turns out that he had the name before his vampire days, as a result of his "bloody awful poetry." William wasn't always a bad boy — prior to being vamped, he was a shy, sensitive, aspiring poet. After getting shot down by the girl who inspired his poetry, he was killed and then sired by Drusilla. Drusilla, of course, was the love of his un-life, until she left him — twice: first for a Chaos demon and then for a Fungus demon. Only 120 years old , Spike has already killed two Slayers. He tried multiple times to kill Buffy, but to no avail (but then again, she didn't kill him either). After being gone for all but one episode of season three , Spike became a regular in season four, and didn't have better luck in Sunnydale the second time around — thanks to the Initiative, he got a chip implanted in his head which renders him unable to kill or hurt anything other than another demon (which he does, leaving him unpopular in the demon world). Much to his chagrin, he then developed a major crush on the Slayer herself. This crush led him to reject both Drusilla and Harmony in favor of the non-reciprocating Buffy, and to have a Buffy sex-robot built to allow him to fulfill his kinky fantasies. Unfortunately for Spike, the real Buffy discovered the robot and took it from him. The combination of the chip and his love for Buffy seemed to have a positive effect on Spike, who became a helpful ally to the Scooby Gang. During Season 6, after Buffy came back from the dead emotionally screwed up, she began a secretive sexual (and violent) relationship with Spike. After she ended it, he tried to initiate sex with her again, and ended up attempting to rape her. Horrified, he went to Africa to get his soul back, which now appears to be driving him somewhat insane.
James Wesley Marsters, 40, grew up in Modesto, California (that's right, the accent is fake). He decided when he was just three years old that he wanted to be an actor. He studied at Juilliard and has done a lot of work in theater. He loves theater acting, but also loves his work on Buffy — especially the violent scenes and stuntwork. James listens to all kinds of music, from Radiohead to the Sex Pistols, and he likes his steaks very rare. The scar on his left eyebrow is from an attempted mugging in New York, but the more interesting one is the one on his left leg: he shredded it on a sprinkler head as a child ("My leg slid down my bone like a sock"), was off his feet for almost a year, and the hair there grows sideways due to the skin graft he had done. James is an admitted night owl, but not really a partier — he doesn't drink, and he takes joy in late night cable television. His hobbies include driving in the desert, playing guitar, singing, painting, and writing. James (who is left handed, by the way, like Jamie Marie) lives in Los Angeles.

Birthdate: August 20, 1962 (Though some sources report 1969 or 1971.)
Birthplace: Greenville, California
Height: 5'10"
Eyes/Hair: Blue/brown (naturally)
Dating status: Single

Alexander LaVelle Harris was born and raised in Sunnydale, and has been friends with Willow since childhood (they used to sleep over at each other's houses regularly). Jesse was Xander's other best friend, until he was turned into a vampire and inadvertently staked by Xander. As with most of the characters, little is known about Xander's family, except that his mom can't cook, there could be alcoholism in the family (he sleeps outside on Christmas Eve to avoid his family's drunken fights), and Cordelia has implied that his father is unemployed. Despite his problems (or perhaps because of them), Xander consistently maintains his sense of humor, making wise-crack after wise-crack (much in the vein of Chandler on Friends). Xander was not an exceptional student, but he's always been ready and willing to help Buffy in her endeavors. His track record in the romance department has been less than optimal — he was turned down by Buffy, fell for a praying mantis and an Incan mummy girl, had a one night stand with bad-girl Faith (only to be kicked out afterwards and assaulted by her shortly after), and went to the prom with an ex-demon (Anya). When he settled into something vaguely resembling a relationship with Cordelia, he messed that up by kissing Willow ... and getting caught. Xander did manage to graduate high school (despite some fan speculation that he might not), although didn't go to college with the gang, instead successfully working in construction, where he is now making pretty good money. He and Anya became a couple after high school, and eventually got engaged in Season 5. Unfortunately, Xander wasn't ready to get married, due in large part to a fear of becoming like his dad, and he called it off on the day of the wedding, breaking Anya's heart. After Tara's death, Willow went berserk, and now endowed with immense magical powers, attempted to destroy the world. Although Buffy was no match for her, Xander managed to get through to Willow by reminding her of their close friendship over the years. Xander thus saved the world.

Nicholas Brendon, 32, attended College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California (he is a California native), where he played baseball. His original goal in life was to play professional baseball, but he had to give up that goal when he broke his arm in a manner which diminished his baseball performance. He decided to give acting a try (though he first had to work on eliminating his stutter) — his first job was a Clearasil commercial. But he wasn't getting a lot of work, so he got a behind the scenes job as a production assistant on Dave's World. This led to an audition for the same series, which he nailed, and soon after his luck got a bit better, culminating in his landing the role of Xander on BtVS. Nicholas enjoys baseball, basketball, and camping, and lives with his identical twin brother, Kelly (who is often mistaken for Nick by fans, and who doubled for Nick in episode 5.03, "The Replacement"). He's friends with fellow Jason Behr (Roswell) and Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek), and says that even if he could, he wouldn't change the character of Xander.

Birthdate: April 12, 1971
Birthplace: Los Angeles
Height: 5'11"
Eyes/Hair: Brown/Hazel
Siblings: Kelly, Christian, and Kyle
Dating status: Married to actress since Sept. 1, 2001.
Nick has been a regular since the beginning, appearing in every episode except for "Conversations with Dead People."

Dawn Summers, 16, is The Key, and Buffy's sister. After protecting The Key for centuries, the monks of the order of Dagon were forced to hide it from Glory, a hellgod, by turning it into a human girl. They placed Dawn with the Slayer, disguised as a younger sister, and implanted memories in everyone in Buffy and Dawn's lives that made it seem as if Dawn had always been a part of Buffy's family. It is unclear how the implanted memories are activated or if people outside of the Summers' lives know about Dawn. The insane and those "outside of reality," such as clairvoyants, are able to see that she is not real, and Buffy was able to identify her as part of a spell by going into a deep trance. Joyce seemed to recognize that Dawn was not truly her daughter at certain moments when she was being affected by her brain tumor. Dawn was initially unaware of her true nature, but learnt the truth, much to her distress, when she broke into the Magic Box and read Giles' diary. Glory's aim in this world was to find the Key — it turned out the Key could break down all the dimensional barriers, and Glory intended to use Dawn in a ritual to get back to her own dimension. This ritual would result in Dawn's death, and the unleashing of countless demon dimensions on earth. Buffy wasn't able to stop Glory from starting the ritual, but by sacrificing her own life she was able to stop it in time to save Dawn and the world. Luckily for Dawn, Willow was able to bring Buffy back from the dead. Still, Dawn's life wasn't easy for her (being not quite real, having such a strange life, and with her sister being detached and distant after her resurrection), and she developed a thieving habit as a cry for attention. This was eventually discovered, and Buffy has since improved her relationship with Dawn, who is now attending high school at the newly rebuilt Sunnydale High School.

Michelle Trachtenberg, 17, was born in New York, and now resides in LA. She has been acting since she was just three years old, appearing in more than one hundred commercials. Michelle also appeared for two years on the ABC soap opera All My Children as Lily Montgomery. It was at AMC that she met Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed Kendall on the soap, and when Sarah heard about the new character of Dawn, she suggested Michelle for the role. When not working on Buffy, Michelle attends high school (she gets tutored on set while filming). Her immediate family includes her parents, one older sister (Irene) and one cat (Casey). Her hobbies include writing, reading, and creating beaded jewelry. She also collects fairies and BtVS items — she was a fan of BtVS long before winning the role of Dawn. Michelle is also active in various charities, including DARE, RADD, Youth of America, and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Angel the human was born in 1727 with the name Liam. Angel the vampire was "born" in 1753, making him 246 or 247 in vamp years (these are the dates given on Angel's tombstone in flashbacks of the Angel episode "The Prodigal"). Angel was a bit of a rogue, and a drinker as well. He was, in fact, out drinking one night when he encountered Darla, who turned him into a vampire. In 1860, he met Drusilla, killed her family, drove her mad, and then turned her into a vampire. In 1898, he killed the daughter of a Romany (Gypsy) tribe, and the tribe cursed him by restoring his soul; from then on he suffered with guilt over the acts he had committed as a vampire. He ended up in New York city in the 1990s, where a "good" demon, Whistler, found him, took him to LA, and showed him a girl: Buffy. Angel decided to help the Slayer, eventually growing close to her and becoming a useful ally to the Scooby Gang. Buffy and Angel fell in love, and when they made love on Buffy's seventeenth birthday, Angel lost his soul again. It turned out the curse was to be removed if Angel ever experienced a moment of true happiness. Angelus (his vampiric name) wreaked havoc on Buffy and the gang, until Willow succeeded with the spell that would give him his soul back — too late; Angel had awakened Acathla, who would suck the world into hell. To prevent it, Buffy had to send Angel to hell. A few months later Angel was returned to earth, though not through his own efforts. He and Buffy eventually got back together, but Angel eventually realized that she could not live life to her full potential with him (only going out at night, not being able to have children, etc.). So, for Buffy's own sake, Angel broke up with her and left town. He now lives in Los Angeles, helping the helpless and fighting demons with the help of Cordelia and Wesley

David Boreanaz, 32, graduated from Ithaca College in New York, where he acted and studied film, before moving to Los Angeles to try to break into show business. He didn't do too well at first, though he did manage to get a small part on "Married ... With Children." Rather, he worked such jobs as parking cars, painting houses, and selling gourmet food door-to-door. He got his lucky break while walking his dog, Bertha Blue — a manager saw him, signed him, and called Buffy casting director Marcia Schulman to arrange an audition for the role of Angel. Obviously, he got it, and women and girls around the world have been admiring him ever since. David's father is a popular weatherman on Philadelphia's ABC affiliate, WPVI. As David mentions on most talk shows, he was also the host of Rocketship 7 from 1962-78 (he went by the name Dave Thomas then). You can see his father's bio and picture on ABC's site here, and some older pictures of him here and here. David divorced his wife, Ingrid Quinn, in 1999.

Birthdate: May 16, 1971
Birthplace: Buffalo, NY (grew up in Philadelphia, PA)
Height: 6'1"
Eyes/Hair: Brown/brown
Siblings: Two sisters, Beth and Bo
Dating status: Married to actress Jaime Bergman since November 2001

Faith is the other Slayer, called after Kendra was killed by Drusilla. She, like many characters, is a bit of a mystery. What we do know is that she is one troubled girl. Her Watcher (a woman) was killed by a vampire named Kakistos, and Faith witnessed it — then ran away, bringing her plenty of guilt. She's from Boston, and her mother is apparently dead (and was an alcoholic when she was alive). Faith enjoys slaying more than Buffy does (it makes her "hungry and horny"), and she is quite sure that being a Slayer makes her better than everybody else, as well as immune to laws and rules. After Faith accidentally killed the Deputy Mayor, she went to the Mayor himself, offering her services, and they developed a close (if somewhat odd) relationship. She was then officially a rogue Slayer. When Angel pretended to have been turned back into Angelus, Faith was eager to team up with him and torture Buffy, and her jealousy of Buffy became painfully obvious. Later, Faith shot Angel with a poison arrow, for which the cure turned out to be the blood of a Slayer. Buffy intended to feed Faith to Angel, but ended up putting her in a coma instead. Faith remained in a coma until February, 2000 — when she woke up and went seeking revenge against Buffy. Her method of choice was to switch bodies with Buffy via a gift left to her by the deceased Mayor. The experience was difficult for Faith, as she seemed to realize how unhappy she was with herself. She headed to Los Angeles and was hired by Wolfram and Heart to kill Angel, but instead she tried to get Angel to kill her. He wouldn't, and took her under his care until she turned herself in to the Police Department (she was wanted for crimes presumably including assault and murder). She is currently incarcerated in an LA prison.

Eliza Patricia Dushku, 22, grew up in Watertown, Massachusetts, and graduated from high school there. She is Albanian-Danish, and was raised Mormon, but isn't very religious these days (though she does "believe in a higher power"). Her mother is a college professor, and her oldest brother is in the Peace Corps in Central America. Eliza got what you might call her start in the business by signing plays for deaf children at the Watertown Children's Theater, but she got her first film role at 10 years old, in That Night. She continued to get movie roles (you might recognize her as the daughter in True Lies) until she chose to take some time off during her junior and senior years of high school. Buffy was her first role after graduating high school (originally intended as a five-episode stint), and since filming started well before her eighteenth birthday, she had to become legally emancipated from her parents in order to work the long hours. Eliza is a self-described tomboy, only recently beginning to "act like a girl." She is a good singer, has studied dance, does a little Tae-Bo, and loves yoga. Her musical tastes range from the Beastie Boys to Lauryn Hill to Metallica. She currently lives with one of her brothers, and has been appearing in quite a few movies recently. She has said that she's open to guest appearances on Buffy and/or Angel, but she has no interest in signing a long-term contract, and plans to attend college.

Rupert Giles was born in England into a family of Watchers (those who train and guide Slayers) — both his father and grandmother were Watchers. The young Giles was disappointed to find out that he was destined to be a Watcher; he had wanted to be a fighter pilot or a grocer. He attended Oxford University, but attempted to reject his destiny and instead rebelled and dabbled in the occult with his friends (who called him "Ripper"), at one point summoning the demon Eyghon to Earth. Giles eventually straightened out and gave in to his destiny, working as a museum curator in England until the Watcher's Council assigned him to Buffy in Sunnydale. Giles, while also working as the Sunnydale High librarian, developed a close father-daughter-like relationship with Buffy, despite the fact that she is an untraditional, somewhat incorrigible Slayer. Giles doesn't seem to have many friends, though he dated computer science teacher Jenny Calendar (until she was killed by Angelus), had a one night stand with Joyce while both were under the influence of poisoned candy (rendering them like teenagers), and a few passing liaisons with a British woman named Olivia. Giles is well-read and intelligent, can play the guitar, fence, and read five languages — and, if necessary, he can hold his own in a fight. Giles has always been straight-laced and stereotypically British, but he has loosened up a bit since he was fired from his post as Watcher (after interfering with the Council's rite of passage test for Buffy). After the gang graduated from high school, Giles was unemployed for a while, except for guitar performances at the Espresso Pump, but he eventually took over a magic shop, The Magic Box, after the previous owner was killed by Harmony's vampire gang, and turned it into a successful business. Buffy also managed to bully the Watcher's Council into rehiring him as her official watcher, complete with retroactive pay. After Buffy's death at the end of Season 5, Giles moved back to England. He returned to Sunnydale when she was resurrected, but later felt that it was best for Buffy if he left, so that she could learnt to be more independent. He did visit at the end of Season 6, in order to help the gang stop Willow, who had gone a bit mad after Tara's death and was trying to end the world. After this incident, Willow went to stay with him for a few months, to learn how to control the magic now within her. Giles now remains in England.

Anthony Stewart Head, 49, was raised in Hampton, England (near London). Anthony is the son of documentary filmmaker Seafield Head and actress Helen Shingler. He studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, and got his first big break playing Jesus in "Godspell." He went on to star in a number of theater productions, including "The Rocky Horror Show," in which he played the transvestite Frank N. Furter. Anthony also appeared in many BBC productions, and some American ones as well, but he may be best known in the U.S. for his role in a series of thirteen commercials for Taster's Choice (Gold Blend in England), in which he and his female neighbor courted over coffee. In his free time, Anthony is working on a script for a animated, musical feature film, in the vein of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." He lives in England with his long-time girlfriend and their children. Anthony enjoys horse-riding, swimming, and singing, and has been known to watch "Sunset Beach" and "The Young and the Restless."

Birthdate: February 20, 1954

Height: Unknown
Eyes/Hair: Hazel/brown
