The U.S. produces about 1 billion tons of coal annually.
Approximately two-thirds of today's coal production results from surface, rather than underground, mining.
The U.S. has nearly 261 billion tons of recoverable coal reserves, according to the Energy Information Administration
Coal is found in 38 states, under 458,600 square miles-or about 13 percent of the nation's land area.
Power plants being built today emit 90 percent less pollutants (SO2, NOx, Particulates, mercury) than the plants they replace from the 1970s, according the National Energy Technology Laboratory.
U.S. coal mining directly employs nearly 136,000 people; For each coal mining job, an additional 3.5 jobs are created elsewhere in the economy.

Railroads move about two-thirds of U.S. coal shipments annually.
Coal plants in the 21st century emit 40% less co2 than the average 20th century coal plant, according to the World Coal Institute.
Coal accounts for approximately 94 percent of the nation's fossil energy reserve.2012-06-18 [Nekko fox]: Coal mining in general is a terrible practice because it's governed by corporate entities that seek to get the most out of the mining while spending as little as possible to maximize profits.
2012-06-18 [Susie-Q]: *withe an umpire's mask, slides up next to [Nekko fox] throwing a thumb over one shoulder* YUUUUUUUUUUUUU
2012-06-18 [Susie-Q]: This broadcast brought to you by the senseless ads that appear at the bottom of your screen
2012-06-19 [Lord Josmar]: Well, like it or not, without coal you would most likely not have power. Also, over 400,000 people would be without a job which would cause the collapse of several small town economies which would have heavy impact on state economies and then, eventually, the country's economy.
2012-06-19 [Flisky]: You've obviously never seen West Virginian economy then. (WV economy? What economy? There is no economy. Just coal, and even there the jobs are disappearing. *looks around* Maybe this ain't the place....)
2012-06-19 [Nekko fox]: It's a pity that according to geological surveys taken in 2011, we only have roughly 200 yrs of coal to mine, and about 40 more years of crude oil. Can you imagine? 1,271,909,744,
2012-06-19 [Avaz]: Doom, doooom, DOOOOOOOM! *flails arms around wildly*
2012-06-20 [Lord Josmar]: While true that the economy is falling apart as it is, it wold be worse off without coal. Also, I have already conceded that West Virginia coal (and the state) were very bad examples of good coal mining operations.
Everyone in coal mining know that, lol.
2012-06-20 [Nekko fox]: It's a pity that according to geological surveys taken in 2011, we only have roughly 200 yrs of coal to mine, and only about 40 years worth of crude oil.
2012-06-20 [Nekko fox]: Just think, 1,150,794,346,
2012-06-20 [Nekko fox]: Well, at least we'll have coal to burn when the government decides it doesn't want the civilians to use cars and designate gas is for "Emergency" and "Military Use Only".
2012-06-20 [Lord Josmar]: I doubt coal would be a reasonable vehicular fuel source. Could you imagine pulling into a coal station to fill up at $2.75 a shovel?
2012-06-20 [Nekko fox]: I was thinking "Coal to keep us warm", but yeah, coal isn't really a viable vehicular fuel...
Well, maybe for trains, but they usually have huge coal cars for that...
2013-04-10 [Susie-Q]: So coal, we need that stuff right?
2013-04-10 [Susie-Q]: Also, coal train, hah :)
2014-09-11 [Avoral]: All this talk of coal makes me want to get back into Minecraft.
2014-09-15 [Lord Josmar]: Here is another fun little fact. Microsoft just bought Mojang (Minecraft) for 2.5 billion dollars.
2014-09-15 [Lord Josmar]: Lol. I doubt that this plot will be thwarted by a British, hippie, spy though.
2017-08-09 [Avoral]: Hey now, Austin Powers bathed regularly. He was more of a swinger than a hippie.
2017-08-10 [Mortified Penguin]: I always thought of him as somewhat of a love guru.
