Personallity: Hugh has spent a long time alone, dealing with animals and not directly with people. Even though he is quite caring and respectful of people he can seem rough and cold because of his reluctance to talk. He prefers to do things rather than talk about them, but has enough patience to deal with others less willing to do the actions. He occasionally follows his instinct before his thought process, which can get him into trouble. His habit of not making the smartest decision has followed him throughout life, and while his life keeps him fit, the state he allows himself and his home to fall into leaves him unhealthy.

History: As a child Hugh was encouraged to believe in the virtues of his father, that a man needs to be strong, needs to trust himself above all else, and then he doesn’t need anyone else. This resulted in a rather empty child hood for Hugh, even more so than would usually be expected from a rancher’s son at a high class school. Motivated by his father and the prophesy of the ‘self-made man’ Hugh never let the solitude interfere with his studies or his work back on the farm, applying himself to business management in the school and the actual ranch work back at home. This has drilled home to him that the work is the most important thing, making something of yourself and becoming known through hard work and hard work alone. This has meant he will sometimes work through illness, exhaustion, storms, whatever the outside world could throw at him, he shrugged it off and tried to keep working. He took over the ranch and all responsibilities after his father’s sudden heart attack; his father, no longer fit to work, moved away from the ranch to be cared for by Hugh’s mother, and after a doctor’s appointment the genetic heart defect was detected in Hugh as well. Given advanced warning, he has a chance to stop it, but Hugh’s current behaviour was driving him closer and closer towards an attack. Finally faced with something he could not just walk off, the threat of a large and inevitable heart attack, he finally caved in and agreed to have another human presence on his ranch. He could afford it, sure, but the human contact was something he was not used to.
