Becky L. Vaughn Owens

Is there a story behind your username?
Despite the popularity of Harry Potter, where everyone automatically assumes it comes from, it's my Native American name.

Your age?
27

Your place of Living?
Southern Illinois

Your occupation?
Babysitter and aspiring novelist

What are your hobbies?

I love to draw. I've had no official training but I was always greatly inspired by animation as a child. As of late I've been enjoying the full length animated features from Marvel and DC as well as various anime. I'd like to perhaps do a few commissions so I built: Commissions by: Ravenclaw to help me practice my diversity and maybe make a little money lol.

I always fancied writing. I'd written a couple short stories concerning some of my rpg characters, but nothing of any great length. When I began reading Stephen King's The Dark Tower I decided to revisit an idea for a novel that I'd had as a teenager. That's not at all what I ended up writing, but my goals and tastes had changed since then. I decided to write something that I wanted to read rather than something someone else thought I might like. I recently finished my first novel called 13 Moons, which is currently being proofread by a friend of mine. I eventually intend to offer it on Amazon for download. I've begun that novel's sequel and have plans for a third. Anyone interested can read chapter one of 13 Moons here: http://windego.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3ap5h9

I also enjoy hunting. My father began taking me hunting with him when I was or 6. Mostly for squirrel and rabbit. When I turned 11 I began deer hunting with him. And no, it's not about outsmarting some dumb animal or getting the biggest buck to hang on the wall. The last bit is just icing on the cake lol. But more than that it's part of the father daughter bonding experience. I've hunted with my father for the last 16 years and it's our thing I guess. I also don't believe in killing something you aren't going to eat. Trophy hunting is senseless and wasteful. Deer meat is a staple of our household diet and if I didn't like the taste of it, I wouldn't hunt.

It's also fun getting to play in all that blood and guts once a year lol.

How did you end up on Elftown?

I used to frequent Elfwood all the time, browsing galleries and making comments. Once upon an afternoon Elfwood happened to be down and there was a link directing users to check out Elftown. Within a few days I was messaged by [shadow of darkness]. We were wed on 10-31-09. If Elfwood hadn't been down that day, I never would have met my husband.

What do you like most about fantasy?

I wouldn't say I like fantasy so much as I like fiction. I often say that my imagination is a wondrous, yet incredibly dangerous place so I don't really like to limit it if I can help it. The term "fantasy" conjures up images of fairies and elves when general fiction can bleed into any genre or subculture.

What is it you do mostly on Elftown?

Role play. When I first met [shadow of darkness] he invited me to play in X-men united which he had co-created. After a few months the co-creator dropped out and I stepped in to pick up the slack. From X-U I met [Chel.] and [Evolution X] who have become great friends and the foundation of our RP group.

I don't like just one genre, but I do like games where the moderator is open minded enough to take input from their players. I see RPGing as an ongoing epic tale. You and your fellow players are the authors, but are all responsible for your own characters.

Is there a particular thing you like about Elftown, such as a specific wiki?

I like the ability to take a blank wiki and make something wonderful with it. A blank wiki can become a game, a gallery or a shop in just a few moments. It's a service that ET doesn't get enough credit for.

Is there a member whose house you really like yourself? Why do you like that house?

Not especially. I don't really frequent people's houses unless I need to message one of my friends.

Have any critique/comments/suggestions/admiration etc. on a specific Elftown matter?

The advertisements at the bottom of each page. It's been bothering me for a while now. I understand that Elftown doesn't exactly have much control over what's featured there, but when there are four adverts and three of them are boasting breasts, it makes us as Elftowners look bad. Not that I don't enjoy a nice rack as much as the next heterosexual gal, but I think we could show a little more class than that.

What is your message to all Elftowners?

I don't know that I have any profound kernels of knowledge for ETers in general, but for fellow role players I'd like to say that it's not about your character. Sure, to some degree it's about your character, but it's mostly about everyone else. If you can make a character and their player feel like you really care about them and what's going on more than you do about what your character has to do with it, it usually makes you a pretty damn fine role player. Don't play as if your character is the only player in the game. You aren't the only person on the planet are you? Neither is your character. Everything they do directly influences what other characters do around you. How you deal with other characters is what makes you a good or bad role player.

Also, be kind to your game-master/moderator. Chances are they've put a LOT of time and effort into making sure YOU have a good time. It's important for a mod to be flexible, but it's also important for a player to take direction. Don't see the mod as an authority figure, see them as another player who you need to work with, not against.
